sudo 1.7.4 with the -s flag breaks my shell!

No it doesn’t. It just doesn’t preserve your $HOME variable, as explained in the UPGRADE file. To fix it, just follow the instructions in there and add:

Defaults env_keep += HOME

to your sudoers file. Voila!
